To become a Kal'enedral:

1. Earn the points necessary to become a Shin'a'in
2. Write a story (minimum 10 pages) about how your persona became Sword Sworn and send the story to one of the QO zines.

You are now at the Student stage. A Leshya'e Kal'enedral appears to teach you.

Kal'enedral, Beginner

To earn the rank of Kal'enedral, Beginner, do one of the following:

1. Join the SCA or similar Living History Re-enactment Group that has ranks for fighters. Learn a period style of fighting and attain the first rank.

2. Join a martial arts class and attain the first rank

Kal'enedral, Advanced

To earn the rank of Kal'enedral, Advanced, first qualify for Kal'enedral, Beginner. Then,

1. Write a 20-page paper on the following subject and
2. Submit it to an essay contest or to your teacher for extra credit.

Topic: Learn about the uses of horses in warfare, e.g., light cavalry, heavy cavalry, and supply issues.

And

3. Advance to the next rank in your Re-enactment Group or martial arts class.

Kal'enedral, Priest/Priestess

To earn the rank of Kal'enedral, Priest/Priestess, first qualify for Beginner and Advanced. Then

1. Demonstrate map making skills, including a knowledge of how you show topography and terrain.
2. Submit your work to a 'zine.

And

3. Write a 20-page paper on the fighting technique you have been studying, its history, philosophy, tactics, ethical code, discipline, and so forth.

And

4. Advance to the next rank in your Re-enactment Group or martial arts class.

Kal'enedral, Shaman

To earn the rank of Kal'enedral, Shaman (the Kal'enedral who are clad in midnight blue instead of black), first qualify for Beginner, Advanced and Priest/Priestess. Then

1. Write a 20-page tactical dissertation on survival techniques.

2. Submit your paper to a local magazine.

And

3. Write a 20-page paper on the roles of shaman and warrior within a clan and how the two can be combined.

And

4. Deliver one of your 20-page papers orally to an audience.

And

5. Advance to the next rank in your Re-enactment Group or martial arts class.

Kal'enedral, Leshya'e

For those wishing to have a Kal'enedral, Leshya'e, persona, you must follow all the guidelines for Kal'enedral, Shaman, rank,

And

1. Write a 20-page tactical dissertaion on the single fighter vs. a group, and
2. Submit it to a local magazine.

And

3. Write a 20-page paper on modern survivals of an ancient nomadic or steppe religion, and
4. Submit it to a local magazine.

And

5. Create a "myth" of your own.
6. Write it as a story and submit it to a zine.

And

7. Write a 20-page paper explaining how "miracles" and "visions" can be explained by purely mundane means.
8. Submit it to a local magazine.

And

9. Advance to the next rank in your Re-enactment Group or martial arts class.

Remember, if Kal'enedral are rare, Leshya'e Kal'enedral are a hundred times rarer, so the effort is that much more.

Special Notes for Kal'enedral

• As proof of your qualifications, send a brief description of what each rank as a fighter required you to do to obtain it and a photo of you receiving the rank or a copy of the certificate granting you the rank. For the oral presentation, send a recording of you delivering the paper.

• Send a copy of each 20-page paper and tell where and when it was published. (Finding a publisher is part of the challenge. If the piece is too long for any local publisher to accept, let me know. Queen's Own will publish such materials in its online nonfiction journal, The Compass Rose. Published books count in place of papers if the book is on the same topic as the paper.)

• Your persona may only be Sworn to the Warrior. Scroll Sworn (Kal'enedral Oathbound to the Crone) are Misty-only type characters and are not available for play.
