Bree Sitting by Chell Cornette

Heyla, Misty fans!

The big news of the month is that we have been granted permission to hold online RPGs in our private chatroom on Delphi! We will be posting the rules on our website within the next few weeks. We will let you know when those pages are up and when the events will be held. You can also learn some details on the message boards in our private Delphi Forum (http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qodelphi.htm) and on our QO chatlist (http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qochat.htm). If you want to participate and have not yet accepted the invitation to our private forum that you were issued when you joined QO, please contact Herald-Mage Adept Danya at Legend@malcor.com.

The DAW 30th Anniversary Fantasy Anthology is now available! It contains a story by Misty in which she receives a midnight visit from several of her characters who have a bone to pick with her about the way she wrote about them. Very clever-and lots of Valdemar trivia from Vanyel, Kerowyn, Myste, Talia and others in addition to tidbits from Di Tregarde, Tannim and others! Larry Dixon also has a story in the collection. His contribution is set after the founding of k’Valdemar and features details about Healers, the Guard and gryphons. You can see the coverart at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/bkmlvs.htm#DAW.

The new Valdemar novel about Alberich, Exile’s Honor, is running a bit behind schedule. (Alberich wasn’t cooperating as a character, and Misty had to do some major rewriting.) In the meantime, do check out Misty’s short story in the DAW Anthology. There seems to be a preview of “Coming Attractions,” so to speak . Word on the Mercedes-Lackey mailing list (Mercedes-Lackey@lists.herald.co.uk; http://lists.herald.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/mercedes-lackey) is that Misty and Larry have plans to put in an appearance at a con sometime this summer. We’ll let you know when we find out which one.

By way of correspondence, the new dean of Arrows OnLine writes:

"I would like to introduce myself. My name is Monty Haggerman. I am very happy and honored to be the new Dean of Arrows Online. Herald Ryha has informed me of some of my duties and responsibilities but if there are more (or any advice!) please let me know.

"There is one very important thing that I would like for you to know and that is that I am a HOST on AOL. My screen name is HOST EBK Royal. With this position I HOST chats. Currently the chat that I HOST is Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar and Urban Fantasies. Although I see no reason for any conflict, there might be some confusion with me jumping back and forth from Tayledras Royal and HOST EBK Royal. (Mostly in my own head I'm sure)

"Thanks again Laura for your support and faith in me!

"Monty Haggerman
Tayledras Royal
Dean: Arrows Online"

Teri Lee of Firebird Arts & Music (http://www.firebirdarts.com) writes:

"The Map of Valdemar is at the printers and is expected sometime in the next month or so. This is the Larry Dixon map from the front of the Valdemar Companion. This will be printed on tan parchment paper in dark brown ink. $15.00 plus shipping."

Each of Firebird’s online newsletters is now featuring a new "Ask Misty" question and answer. This is also the place to find Misty-related audio recordings. Check the website for a list of Faires and Cons where Firebird will be present.

In this month’s interview we meet the other co-President of Golden Grove, Theresa Young (The interview with Jaime Paz was in the May 2002 newsletter.). Enjoy!

Zhai'helleva,

Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

  1. When did you join Queen's Own?

I joined in March of 2002.

  2. What got you hooked on Misty's books?

I first read Winds of Fate, and I loved it. After that, I just kept reading her books. I got the first one purely by chance. I helped out in our school library, and the cover attracted me, so I took it down to check it out.

  3. What else do you read?

I read anything. There are books I don't like, and topics that aren't my favorite, but I'll read it anyway. My favorite things to read are fiction, and Shakespeare. I love reading anything about the Renaissance, and I like biographies as well.

  4. What types of music do you listen to?

I listen to classical music, preferably Tchaikovsky, anime music, and J-pop. Other than that, I really don't listen to music. I don't mind a lot of music, and the only type I really dislike are bands like Tool, and others that have music like that.

  5. What was the first con you went to?

The first con I ever went to was in August of 2001, and it was Otakon. I had such a great time, even though our hotel was a quarter of a mile away and it poured down rain all three days. I didn't have any clothing dry at the end of Sunday, and my suitcase was wet as well. I've never minded getting stuck in the rain since, and I'd do it all over if I could.

  6. What do you like the best about Queen's Own?

The thing I like best about the Queen's Own are the people who are in it. Everyone I've talked to is a wonderful person, who has an interesting point of view and who's willing to share it.

  7. Why did you choose to the editor of a Queen's Own fanzine/newsletter?

I chose to be the editor of a newsletter because I love writing. I love anything about it, and I had some free time that would have been better spent doing this. Besides, I get to read stories first!

  8. What does putting out an issue of your fanzine/newsletter involve?

Putting out an issue is something I'm still working on. So far, it involves finding interesting things to put in it, and organizing it all into something that makes sense. After that, I'll let you know.

  9. What do you like to see in the way of story and/or art submissions to your fanzine/newsletter?

In the way of art submissions, I like anything. I like a variety of styles and subject matter, but it doesn't really matter. I prefer colorful pieces, but black and white can also be good when done well. As for stories, if it's well written, chances are I'll like it. Any type of story is great, and people who have enough courage to submit their stories deserve to have them read.

  10. What other projects besides Queen's Own occupy your time?

Other projects besides Queen's Own. Wow. Well, I don't have many projects, per say, because I do so many other things. I'm preparing to write a book now, so I work on that a lot each day. I'm a student, so I go to school and have homework to do as well. I've been taking fencing for 3-and-a-half years, and fence in competitions as well as classes. I have a rose garden that I work on a bit, and I do fansub distribution on a small scale. That's pretty much everything I do.

Collegium News:

We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm.

You need a release form (online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qomlrel2.htm) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.

All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to Legend@malcor.com and healermoon@gmail.com.

Lost . . .

One of the challenges running an online club is that people don’t always leave a forwarding address when they move . We are missing current e-mail addresses for the following members:

  • Tayledras Mage Autumnwynd k'Vaia (autumnwynd@aol.com)
  • Herald Cateryna Cyray (KimChrist@Home.com)
  • Herald Deborah (sjupiterdebi@home.com)
  • Herald Ian Hawkwood (ianhawke1@aol.com)
  • Herald Kendryl Shadowwolf (kscarpat@altavista.com)

Also, Healer Adept Sierra k'Treva, your account is over quota and your messages are bouncing.

If you know any of these folks, please have them contact Danya at Legend@malcor.com with a current e-mail address.

From Herald-Mage Adept Danya Winterborn:

Real life has become a bit hectic around here lately. We’re coming to the end of the school year (which is always a crazy time). My mother has developed a bunch of critical health problems (She just had her thyroid removed on May 31st.) and is looking for a new home. Moonstar is selling her home and moving, and we’ve seriously outgrown our current home and are thinking about moving as well.

I plan to put all the chaos on hold, however, from June 14th - June 23rd when I will be taking the first vacation I’ve had since 1995. My family and I will be traveling to Alameda for a few days to visit friends, and then we’re heading up to Lake Tahoe, with day trips planned to Virginia City, Nevada, Carson City, and various other locations near the lake. I’m very much looking forward to the break (not to mention help with childcare and the glory that is maid service !). I’ll be traveling with a computer, as always, but I may not be as speedy in replies as I usually am. (Not that I’ve been all that speedy lately, a lapse which I regret but for which I have no current remedy until real life decides to settle down. Sorry!)

In the meantime, I’ve been plowing through Misty’s Elemental Mage series, which I’m enjoying quite a lot. I have also finished reading Misty’s and Larry’s short stories in the DAW 30th Anniversary Fantasy Anthology. Good stuff!

I’m looking forward to getting our QO RPGs off the ground, which will hopefully happen sometime this summer. Moonstar and I have worked out the details. I’ll put up the related webpages (with instructions as to how we are going to conduct these sessions, etc.) some time after I return from our vacation.

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there!

Zhai’helleva,

Danya

Fan Messages:

The newsletter is routinely posted to the Net. If you are concerned about your address falling into unfriendly hands, don't place a fan message! You may answer fan messages without ever placing one yourself. The editors reserve the right to edit--and shorten!--all messages. (Remember to tell your Post Office about your alternative name if you wish to receive mail addressed to your persona at an addressed where you receive mail under your real name.)

The only "fee" for a fan message is to write to two other people. If your mailbox is empty, don't complain--write letters!

  • From White Winds Sorceress Shadow Weaver (cimeshadow@aol.com). I am looking for gothic and sci-fi fantasy events in Ohio/KY/Indiana/West Virginia to merchant at. If you have any info please e-mail cimeshadow@aol.com or snail mail Cimeshadow Weaver, 2119 Jasmine Dr., Lexington, KY, 40504.

  • From Jennifer Mackay-Douglas (vze28fbf@verizon.net) to all her old pen pals (and some new ones, I hope): I got married in May 99 and I moved around so much I lost track of my old pen pals. My interests include reading soft SF, short stories (primarily Asimov's because of budget), and fantasy. Nonfiction topics I usually read include: vegetarian cooking, pet care, natural health, history (my hubby and I do Civil War reenacting), and science research on genetic engineering (for my in-progress SF novel). I love going to SF/F cons, enjoy roleplay gaming, watching movies and TV. (I especially love Farscape on the Sci-Fi Channel.) I love all forms of Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and a ton of other shows and movies. I enjoy reading Misty, Tad Williams, Kate Elliott, Llewellyn, Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. LeGuin, Louise Cooper, Tara K. Harper, and many more! Write me snail mail or email and I'll write you back. :-) Send snail letters via the US Post Awful to: Jennifer Mackay-Douglas, 970 Main Street, Clifton Park, NY 12065.

  • From Crystal Sarakas Kocher (crys@stny.rr.com) 26-year-old radio/television producer looking for friends who enjoy long, silly conversations, dreaming of Valdemar and other such things. I would love to hear from old friends that I have lost touch with over the years and from new friends, too!

  • From Herald-Mage Hedge Wizard Jensen Redstart/Kat Knafelc dragonfodder@gmail.com. 22-year-old college grad going back for her Master's in Ecology in the fall. Loves reading, writing, fandom, Scooby-Doo and comic books.

  • From Herald-Mage Danya. To: All. Re: Cookbook. If you've read my persona submission in CoV, you know that I like making up medieval-style recipes. I'm thinking about compiling a cookbook based on meals that Misty describes in the Velgarth series. If anyone is currently reading the books, could you note the book and page any food items are mentioned on and send them to me at Legend@malcor.com? Thanks!
