Herald-Calisa by Devin Harris

Heyla, Misty fans!

Wow! Can you believe it? This is our second anniversary issue! A lot of things have happened over the past two years, some of which Moonstar details in this month’s note from her. We have had over 53,600 hits to our website, and our traffic continues to grow every week. We are tremendously grateful for the prominent mention we received in The Valdemar Companion, which has helped many former members find us and which has led dozens of future members to us as well. We continue to add and revive chapters. (See their ads below.) We have added an overview of our regional chapters at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qochap.htm. Check it out! Please help support your local QO organization. This is part of how we keep our fantastic zines running!

On a related note, Tayledras Royal k'Vesia, the new Dean Arrows Online, a Chapter of Queen's Own, invites you to join him for:

Mercedes Lackey's Book Chat Discussion
Wednesday Nights
9-10 EST
Reading Room on AOL

This discussion is open to anyone who loves Mercedes Lackey’s works; you do not have to be a member of Arrows or QO to participate. Check out the Arrows message boards for the weekly topic.

The official QO trip to the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire (which was featured in Bedlam’s Bard) will be May 19th. If you are planning to attend, let us know so we can make arrangements to meet you either at the front gate at opening or elsewhere during the day.

Do you have a school paper you are particularly proud of or an article that you have written? Perhaps you’ve seen a movie or read a book and would like to share your thoughts? The Compass Rose, our nonfiction journal, is taking submissions for the next issue, which will hopefully be out in June. You can find submission details at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qojournal.htm.

On the non-Misty front, Ron Brown of RB Publishing sent us the following message:

"L.W. Currey and RB Publishing will soon be releasing Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors: A Bibliography of First Printings of Their Fiction and Non-Fiction--Revised Edition. This book was originally published in 1979, and quickly became the primary resource for collectors and book dealers in determining first edition and state of Science Fiction and Fantasy Books through 1977. It has been out of print since and sells for over $200 when and if found. Mr. Currey has just revised this work and it will be available on CD ROM sometime between May 1, and June 1, 2002. It can be ordered now, however, at a significant PRE-PUBLISHING DISCOUNT. This discount will be for a limited time and for a limited number of copies. If interested, you can go to: http://www.cd-bookshop.com and get more details."

It looks as if Battlestar Galactica will become a 4-hour miniseries, featuring some of the original cast. This endeavor is a tribute to the power of fans to influence what we read and see. For more details, visit http://www.battlestarfanclub.com.

Our interviewee for this issue is Jaime Paz (aka Scout Brightshadow k'Vala), one of the co-Presidents of Golden Grove, the California chapter of Queen’s Own.

Zhai'helleva,

Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

  1. When did you join Queen's Own?

My persona was approved in the February 2001 newsletter.

  2. What got you hooked on Misty's books?

Gryphons (from a computer game and from my love of mytholigical creatures).

  3. What else do you read?

Harry Potter, Star Wars (used to anyway), and LotR.

  4. What types of music do you listen to?

Almost any, with the exception of music that makes absolutely no sense (heavy metalish stuff).

  5. What was the first con you went to?

    Haven't been to one yet.

  6. What do you like the best about Queen's Own?

There are other people out there that are like me!! We help each other too, personally if it just so happens .

  7. Why did you choose to the editor of a Queen's Own fanzine/newsletter?

It needed to be done. A fanzine is important for bringing in more people and expanding our Queen's Own club, and it brings more enjoyment in joining a club as well.

  8. What does putting out an issue of your fanzine/newsletter involve?

Considerable time, patience, and the energy and passion to do so.

  9. What do you like to see in the way of story and/or art submissions to your fanzine/newsletter?

Any at all, as long as it's based on QO. I'm actually planning myself in submitting a few stories I'm writing up to the fanzine (as well as to the other fanzines)

  10. What other projects besides Queen's Own occupy your time?

A story set in the time of Heralds of Valdemar series, only after the events of the Mages Storms and Darian’s tale. About another Eastern Empire attack and the return of a demon. More on that later . . .

Collegium News:

We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm.

You need a release form (online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qomlrel2.htm) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.

All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to Legend@malcor.com and healermoon@gmail.com.

We do not have any new members to announce in this newsletter, but we do have almost five dozen people currently working on their personae. We hope to be welcoming them soon.

Returning Misty fans who have activated their memberships include:

Welcome back! If you are a returning member who has recently activated your membership in Queen’s Own and we have forgotten to list you, message Danya at Legend@malcor.com, and she’ll make sure you are greeted in the next newsletter.

Several former members have returned. Check out http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qolist.htm as well as our Delphi forum to see who has reappeared! (If you know any of the people listed who do not have active memberships, please tell them about us so they can contact us and we can activate their memberships.)

Lost . . .

One of the challenges running an online club is that people don’t always leave a forwarding address when they move . We are missing current e-mail addresses for the following members:

Also, Healer Adept Sierra k'Treva, your account is over quota and your messages are bouncing.

If you know any of these folks, please have them contact Danya at Legend@malcor.com with a current e-mail address.

From Healer Adept Moonstar:

Here we are at our two-year anniversary. We currently have about 120 members, and about 80 people currently on our Pending Chat List working on their personas, and several people not on the list that we know are hard at work as well. The club is growing rapidly. Foremer members who happen by the site or read about it in The Valdemar Companion contact us at least once a month. Danya and I are busy trying to keep the website updated and adding more information, including F.A.Q. pages and many informational pages. This year we restructured nearly the entire site, adding more persona types to choose from and ways to advance most of the personas to higher rank. It has helped a great deal that I now live down the street from Danya and can speak with her in person about various tasks we are working on. Also, for those of you who have not sent me your release forms, please do!

I want to thank the Queen’s Own folk as well for being so supportive of me. I know many of you know I have some personal relationship problems right now, and I have had nothing but hugs and support from all of you. Thank you so much!

On a happy personal note, I have completed my Petsmart training, and I am now officially a Pet Trainer and will be teaching classes later this week. I graduated a “Senior Pet Instructor,” which is a higher level than I thought I would graduate and brings more money with it.

I have also finished my surgeries and am nearly finished mending. I would say I am back to 95%. I do not think I will need any more surgeries for a long, long time. With my shoulder surgery, my rotator cuff was damaged but did not need to be rebuilt; the surgeon removed over a ½ inch of bone, and it has helped not only my shoulder but my back as well. I did have endometriosis, which was cleaned up, and lots of scar tissue was removed. It is too soon to tell if that is what was causing the pain or not, but I am much recovered from the surgery in any case.

I look forward to hearing from all of you. I read all the fanzines. Please contribute! Many of you are talented writers and artists, and we love to see your work!

Hugs-

Moonstar

Fan Messages:

The newsletter is routinely posted to the Net. If you are concerned about your address falling into unfriendly hands, don't place a fan message! You may answer fan messages without ever placing one yourself. The editors reserve the right to edit--and shorten!--all messages. (Remember to tell your Post Office about your alternative name if you wish to receive mail addressed to your persona at an addressed where you receive mail under your real name.)

The only "fee" for a fan message is to write to two other people. If your mailbox is empty, don't complain--write letters!
