Dear Misty fans:

From Elise Wollheim at DAW, "Your members will be interested to know that Misty's story 'Dragon's Teeth', will appear in our forthcoming book, Spell Singers. Publication date is December 1988 . . . (This is the DAW paperbook edition of Hypatia Press' Bardic Voices One.)"

Wait 'til you see the cover of OATHBREAKERS (coming out January 1989) from the VOWS AND HONOR series. Jody Lee continues her skillful interpretation of Misty's characters. The two ladies met at the April Concatenation in Tennessee and apparently firmly established a mutual admiration society. Jody asked Misty to have us poll you as to how many of you would be interested in signed, limited edition (50-100) prints of the covers at ±$25 each. Let us know if you would be and, if so, which one(s).

Editor's poll: How many of you would be interested in a limited edition hardcover of Misty's book(s)? Misty has the name of a very reputable small press. If enough of us were willing to pay ±$17 a copy, we might be able to convince them to buy the hardcover rights from DAW. Or perhaps you'd rather exercise your pens/typewriters and write the Science Fiction Book Club urging them to buy the book rights. [Editor's note: I prefer the latter as it would give Misty more exposure, not to mention $$$.]

Beware Thor Records! They have produced a new tape by Kathy Mar called "Plus ca Change" with a song Misty wrote the lyrics for called "Little Green Eyes" and have neither applied for a mechanical license from Firebird nor paid the licensing fee. Therefore, at this time, they are to all intents and purposes plagiarizing Misty's work. Don't buy it! [Ed. note 2002: The October 1988 newsletter announced that Thor Records had paid for the rights.]

ESPECIAL NOTE: Off Centaur is now Firebird Arts and Music [Ed. Note 2002: http://firebirdarts.com/), and they are going to try to do a "Mercedes Lackey--Live" tape as well as revamping the "Murder, Mystery and Mayhem" tape with about a third new material and new, better (to quote Misty) background on the rest. We'll let you know when they're available.

Some of you have asked Misty for copies of her songbook. With so many of you, the time, paper, ribbon and postage make doing this prohibitive. Think about it. Wouldn't you rather she spent her time, energy and money writing more books? Perhaps, just perhaps, if all continues to go well, Firebird Arts and Music will consider doing something about this. Again, if this is what you want, exercise your pens/typewriters and let them know. [Ed. Note 2002: Old address withheld.]

Here is an update on the cons Misty is planning to attend, so far: November 12-14, Windycon, Chicago, Illinois; February 17-19, guest of honor at Fall*Con, Meridian, Mississippi; February 24-26, GoH Contemplation, Columbia, Missouri; March 17-19, guest of honor at Congenial, Racine, Wisconsin; April 7-9, GoH Concatenation, Knoxville, Tennessee.

Misty trivia: Her original nickname was "Dee", but when spending a summer working with youngsters who were supposed to call their counselors Miss, Mrs. or Mr., she became "Miss Dee", then "Missdee", and finally "Misty".

There have also been some questions as to Misty's religious affiliation. She says, "My official religion is 'non-traditional'." [Editor's note: Tch, tch, tch. Mother always said you never ask people about race, religion or politics.]

As those of you who have asked us to know, we send your personal letters directly to Misty. She loves to hear from you and is happy to respond to you, but please include SASEs for her. As with ourselves, your growing numbers make it probibitive to make corresponding a labor of love. [See enclosed pen pal list! And some of you preferred not to be on it.] [Ed. note 2002: List withheld. Anyone know how many people were on it? We do not have a copy.]

COMING NEXT MONTH: Excerpts from Reap the Whirlwind, and update on MAGIC'S PAWN, Misty's World Con report, and lots more.

Keep those cards and letters (with SASEs) coming,

Judith Louvis and Sally Paduch
