September 1, 2003

Tanya by Jessica Ebert

Heyla, Misty fans!

If you had the pleasure of meeting Misty during her recent signing tour, we’d love to here from you! Send Danya (Legend@malcor.com) a written account of the event you attended, and we’ll try to run the pieces in the QO newsletter.

Also, if you attend any Ren. Faires, Cons, book signings or other events of interest to QO members, let us hear about those, too! We want to know what all of you are up to <G>. (By the way, a special thank you to Elizabeth Vines for helping compile our Ren. Faire listings for this edition of the newsletter!)

Publication News: Our favorite author has been very busy (and it looks as if she will be staying that way for quite some time <G>.)!

This October Misty joins James Mallory to bring us The Outstretched Shadow (formerly entitled Shadow Mountian). This is the first book in a brand new series that is currently called The Obsidian Trilogy. Elvenblood, with Andre Norton, will be released in paperback in October as well. (The next installment, Elvenbred, is being written.)

Exile's Valor, the sequel to Exile’s Honor, is scheduled for release in November (but there’s a possibility it might show up as early as October, so keep your eyes peeled). This will be the last major Valdemar book for several years as the series is going on hiatus while Misty concentrates on her other projects. (Exile’s Honor will be out in paperback on October 7, 2003.) Brain Ships, with Anne McCaffrey and Margaret Ball, is scheduled for release November 1st. Charmed Destinies, which contains three novellas by Misty, Rachel Lee and Catherine Asaro, will also be out November 2003.

For your Christmas lists, Sun In Glory (A Valdemar Anthology) (An alternate title was Homecoming and Other Tales of Valdemar; we’re pretty certain Misty isn’t coming out with two Valdemar anthologies in the same month .) is scheduled for release in December; this collection will contain the story of how Talia became a Sun Priest. If the anthology does well, there are hopes that several more such anthologies will be published while we are waiting for the next Valdemar novel. So definitely consider this book for a stocking stuffer! Misty teams up with Eric Flint and Dave Freer, who were her co-authors for The Shadow of the Lion, to bring us This Rough Magic, which is scheduled for release December 1, 2003. (The Shadow of the Lion should be out in paperback in October 2003.)

Misty has followed in the footsteps of her infamous detective Di Tregarde and actually written an adult romance! Coming from Harlequin, January 2004 is The Fairy Godmother (sometimes titled The Godmother Heir, but we think The Fairy Godmother will be the real title). Also in January 2004, look for Stoned Souls, with Josepha Sherman.

Other upcoming titles to look for include Not yet published: A Circus Of Witches, Queen of Air and Darkness, Phoenyx And Ashes and Altan, Book Two in the same series with Joust, the latter of which should appear in paperback in March 2004.

You can find these and other titles through the Mercedes Lackey section of the Dragonlords’ Bookstore http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/bkfanml.htm. A portion of the proceeds goes directly to support QO. This is how we keep our memberships free, so we greatly appreciate your support!

QO Membership Seal: We have not had any submissions to this contest, so we’re going to extend the deadline for another month. Please send your ideas to Danya at Legend@malcor.com.

RPG Opportunity: Thanks to everyone who showed up at the August 25th event. We had a great time! The next QO RPG will be held Sunday, September 28th at 7 PM Pacific Time. The chatroom is located at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qorpg.htm (as are the RPG rules and instructions). If you would like e-mail reminders of this and other events that happen between editions of our newsletter, members of QO can join the QO chatlist at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qochat.htm. We also discuss such things in our Delphi Forum, which is open to QO members only (You can find the link to the forum at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qodelphi.htm.).

Chapter News: We now have a complete list of the chapters and zines that were ever formed under the QO banner-at least those that are mentioned in the newsletters that we’ve managed to post online. Danya hopes to update the QO Chapter and Fanfiction pages soon with that information, putting up the old organizations and publications for adoption. (We’ve found that it’s sometimes easier to revive an old chapter or publication than for someone to start a new one from scratch.) We eventually hope to have little historical bits (such as original founding dates and past leaders/publishers) available as well.

A while back we were contacted by some folks who were starting up a chapter of QO in Florida. We haven’t heard from them in some time, and their start-up URL comes up as "Not Found." If anyone has information about this group, please contact Danya at Legend@malcor.com.

In the meantime, Florida QOers may wish to check out Southern Arrow. One of the oldest chapters of QO, Southern Arrow has been adopted by Herald Sitara (ravindraanima@gmail.com). The new Southern Arrow website is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gaqueensown/. See the ad below for more information. Herald’s Waystation, http://deserthorses.com/heraldswaystation, also accepts members from the Gulf Coast states.

We’ve also had several people contact us about starting (or restarting) a Canadian chapter of QO. Have any of those plans gotten off the ground? The URLs we have for your potential sites do not work. Please contact Danya at Legend@malcor.com with updated information.

A fan from South Africa would like to know if there are any other QO members in the country who would be interested in forming a chapter. Please contact Danya at Legend@malcor.com if you would like to be involved in such a chapter.

Hope you all had a great summer!

Zhai'helleva,

Herald-Mage Adept Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

Member News:

For definitions of our fannish jargon, read the 12-page booklet "Pros & Cons: An Introduction to Fandom" written by Elizabeth Barrette. Send $1.00 and a $0.37 stamp (or $1.00 and 2 IRCs) to Queen's Own, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA, 92652. Make checks payable to "Linda Malcor" in US funds only.

Local chapters:

Zines and Newsletters:

  • Austral'a'in: Editor: Cassandra Vuksa. We print fiction (both fanfic on Velgarth and other fantasy stories), poetry, art, reviews, recipes, articles, personas, pen pal ads and stacks more! This fanzine is up for adoption. Austral'a'in is up for adoption. If you are interested in adopting the chapter, contact Cassandra Vuksa, garou@netspeed.com.au.

  • Children of Velgarth: Editor: Kendra Renaud, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA 92652. I publish new and old personae, even previously published persona if asked by members in this new, official QO zine. I will only accept what was sent in for your persona to Queen's Own to be recognized. Any fan fiction written later should be sent to one of the other zines who really need it to keep their zines going. This fanzine will be published periodically when it reaches 80 pages or so to keep costs at $5.00 payable in U.S. funds or 12 IRCs. Make checks payable to "Kendra Renaud". The fee covers the cost of printing and mailing; you may share (but not duplicate!) copies of the fanzine. Watch the Queen's Own newsletter for release dates. Volume 2, Issue 2 is now available! For the contents list and additional information, visit http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qozine.htm. (Special Note: Make sure you use the P.O. Box Address and not my home address since I’m moving at the end of May. I don’t want any orders to go astray.)

  • Companions' Grove: still needs stories, and artists to illustrate stories! (Remember, all contributors get a free copy of the zine in which their work appears.) Volume Eight is full, and awaiting the illustrations and final layout. ** If you contributed a story or promised me artwork for Volume Eight and have not heard from me recently, please get in touch with me, as I had to reformat my hard drive and lost my zine correspondence and address book earlier this year. If I don’t hear from you by September 2003, I will have to drop your contribution from the zine. ** Volume Nine is open to submissions. Current prices (not including shipping) are:

    • Companions' Grove Volume One - $4.75 (40 pages, color cover)
    • Companions' Grove Volume Two - $6.35 (56 pages, color cover)
    • Companions' Grove Volume Three - $5.95 (51 pages, color cover)
    • Companions' Grove Volume Four - $4.95 (42 pages, color cover)
    • Companions' Grove Volume Five - $7.75 (69 pages, color cover)
    • Companions' Grove Volume Six - $6.55 (57 pages, color cover)
    • Companions' Grove Volume Seven - $5.95 (52 pages, color cover)
    • The Danya Winterborn Saga - $5.20 (52 pages, b/w front and back covers)
    • Endgame - $3.85(36 pages, b/w cover)
    • Fire Eyes - $4.40 (43 pages, b/w cover)
    • Shards of Autumn - out of print, see note below
    • The Sum of Duty - $5.80 (57 pages, b/w cover)
    • Do or Dye: A Guide to Companion Camouflage - $1.25 (20 pages, digest size, b/w cover, saddle stapled)
    • Cat's Cradle - $7.60 (76 pages, monochrome green cover)

For orders shipping in the US, I've instituted a maximum shipping cost of $3.85. Multi-zine orders, which can be shipped in a flat rate envelope (usually 3 of the smaller zines, or 2 of the larger zines), will be sent Priority Mail; larger orders will be sent Media Mail Insured, which is only slightly slower and doesn't have the zone rates (which wouldn't work with my shopping cart). Smaller orders will be sent First Class.

I take credit cards via PayPal, which is the cart's only payment option, but the cart can be used to calculate shipping, and checks/money orders mailed to Green Dragon Press, c/o Devin Harris, 4531 N. Kelishan St., Pahrump, NV 89060.

Except as noted, zines are printed on high-quality, bright white paper, comb bound, with cardstock covers. Story excerpts and cover art-as well as submission guidelines and PayPal ordering information-can be found at http://www.greendragonpress.net/misty.htm. To order via snail mail, send check or money order (payable to Devin Harris; US funds only) to Green Dragon Press, c/o Devin Harris, 4531 N. Kelishan St., Pahrump, NV 89060.

Note regarding Shards of Autumn: While this zine is officially out of print and no longer available on the website, a few copies are left over from convention appearances. Any remaining copies from MediaWest will be available at that con until they sell out; the others are being returned to me and will be auctioned off at http://www.auctionfen.com until they are gone. I also occasionally auction off zines which returned from cons a bit shopworn, so it’s a good site to check periodically.

Collegium News:

We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm.

You need a release form (online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qomlrel2.htm) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.

All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to Legend@malcor.com and healermoon@gmail.com.

From Healer Adept Moonstar:

Here it is back to school time for everyone in my house, likely for you also. I have started into the Unix class I have been looking forward to for a long time now. I am still in the "Oh, lookie at all the homework!" stage of the class. My fiancé, Erik has finally started back to college again and is in Applied Management; it is taking both of us to figure it out as his book it is very badly written. Also, Alex is over-excited about his second year of preschool, due to start on the 9th.

Add to the mix I am starting to do a little private dog training on the side of my already full plate, but the pay is nice and working with one dog at a time will be a nice change. I decided to call my little venture "Dog's Best Friend." I am curious what everyone thinks of the name.

Happily chaotic household.

I am so happy at all the new personas coming in, and most of them are very well written with others only needing minor changes. Please everyone when you send in your personas label them with your first and last name . . . such as something from me would be "KeniRenaudBio.doc" this is much less likely to get lost than "persona.doc"; we have several dozen such files in our computers, and we are not sure what to do with them. I am noticing more of you are putting the heading in each file. Thank you! That is helping tremendously. I enjoyed the RP we had in August and look forward to seeing more of you in September.

Hugs-

Moonstar

If anyone is currently reading the books, could you note the book and page any food items are mentioned on and send them to me at Legend@malcor.com? Thanks!
