Dear Misty Fans,

Border art Congratulations, Misty! Storm Warning is #1 on LOCUS, B.Dalton, and Walden lists. Winds of Fury and Chrome Circle are among the top five paperbacks on all three lists.

Bardic Voices III: The Eagle & the Nightingales has a January/February release date: "Why is the High King of the Human kingdoms not doing his job - and thereby allowing the Church to fill the power vacuum in the human lands of Alanda? This is a matter of some concern to Nightingale and her friends; the Church is becoming ever more overtly hostile to non-human sentients (of which there are several species in Alanda) as well as to anything that it does not at least indirectly control, such as gypsies and Free Bards.

"To discover just what is going on, Nightingale will join forces with T'tyrr, a birdman with the visage of a raptor and the voice of an angelic choir. And before the King - and through him the gypsies, Free Bards and non-humans of the twenty kingdoms - is saved, the Eagle and the Nightingale will have become if not quite lovers than far more than friends . . . "

Watch for Baen's special contest to promote The Eagle & the Nightingales in your favorite bookstore. Just fill out an advanced reservation form. There will be a random drawing among all the reservation forms for 25 autographed limited edition prints of the cover artwork. The top 50 stores handing in the most reservation sheets will also receive prizes. Feathered Mardi Gras masks will be table prizes at World Fantasy Convention later this month.

The new Firebird catalogue carries Misty's books and tapes (and CD's), Jody Lee prints, stationery designed by Misty & Larry, soft sculpture Companions (dragons & fire lizards too), Hawkbrother feather jewelry, the music of Tempest, Michael Longcor, Frank Hayes, Duane Elms, Ciannad, Steeleye Span . . . and much, much more. If you would like to be added to Firebird's mailing list, call them at [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. (If overseas, write to me for a catalog. I'll mail you one if you'll reimburse me for the postage.)

The Eagle and the Nightingales and the paperback version of The Robin and the Kestrel will be available by January, and HOORAY!, The White Gryphon, March/April 1995.

Wondering what to read while you wait for Misty's next book? Even if you prefer fantasy to science fiction, I recommend anything by Lois McMaster Bujold, Elizabeth Moon's Captain Serrano adventures, Hunting Party and Sporting Chance, and for you vampire fans, Tomorrow Sucks, an anthology edited by Greg Cox and T.K.F. Weisskopf. It contains tales of scientific vampirism by Ray Bradbury, Roger Zelazny, Spider Robinson, and others. These creatures of the night stalk through time and space in search of prey both human and otherwise. Throw away your garlic and pour that holy water down the drain. The old rules no longer apply, and nothing can save you.

I've just been introduced to The Parallax Society, a fannish organization with the motto "Fandom should be a hobby, not a way of life." YES! Dues are $15, and you receive an annual subscription to their newsletter The Converzence and a membership certificate and card. In The Convergence you'll find information on other fandoms, TV shows, movies, novels, art . . . If interested, send a SASE to The Parallax Society [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.].

Another club worth investigating is The National Fantasy Fan Federation (N3F for short). This is an old club, established in 1941. The club's main aim is to make contact possible for all fans. You're not alone out there, no matter where you live! N3F has a pen pal group, a fanzine appreciation society, a Games bureau, a Welcommittee to greet new members, a Filksinging bureau . . . and more. New fans and new enthusiasms are welcome. For more info on N3F, send a SASE to William T. Center [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.].

Elizabeth Barrette's "Pros & Cons: an Introduction to Fandom" can be yours for just a dollar and first class postage (a 29 cent stamp or 2 IRC's.) Don't send a SASE because I have envelopes just the right size. This little booklet has definitions of most of the "fan jargon" used in the newsletter and at cons and is especially valuable for neofans.

Renaissance Shopper is published quarterly and contains news of Reai Faires, related articles, and best of all, advertisements for everything from armour to zills. A first class subscription is just $5 for four issues. Send your check to Renaissance Shopper [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.].

"She lifted her tear-stained face to the heavens, a jagged sob escaping her lips as she released her lover's hand. He stared at her, weakly, his beauty all the more brilliant in the moonlight. The sounds of the ball still raged on in the farthest rooms of the castle; she clutched the ribbons of the magnificent mask in her hand. "Remember..." he whispered, pleaded, backing away with a sweet, soft kiss. "Always remember this night, and the moonlight masquerade." From Moonlight Masquerade [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. Looking around the clearing I was soon surrounded by monstrous warhouses. Walking around in gaily colored clothing and long dark braids, a young man smiled a toothy smile and handed me a parchment. I unrolled it and read the top. It read "Under Kal'enel's Care" and was filled with poetry, artwork, letters from others and the locations of traders. I realized I had finally reached my destination, the Dhorisha Plains: home of the Shin'a'in. For more info send SASE to Stephanie Anderson [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. From Herald Housemother:

Welcome to all our new members; we're pleased to have you join us.

Note that the next newsletter will be mailed in DECEMBER instead of November. Please have fan messages and member news to me no later than 11/19. I hope to have the newsletter ready for the printer before I have to start preparing Thanksgiving dinner. I appreciate the politeness that keeps all of you from pointing out how bad MY handwriting is, but I'm still going to nag YOU to be neater! Some messages are barely legible and I don't always know what I'm supposed to be typing, especially with e-mail addresses. It was suggested that QO members attempt to meet at Mardi Gras. ("We could wear costumes and act as strange as we wanted without shocking the local constabulary!!") Anyone out there want to try to arrange a meeting next year?
