Dear Misty Fans,

Border Art Coming in time for the holidays, Misty's Firebird, a coming-of-age fantasy set in Russia before the Tsars. This is the tale of the adventures of a young aristocrat in a fantastic Russian landscape and of his eventual confrontation with the fabled Firebird. Firebird is a TOR hardcover, priced at $24.95. It has a December release date but may be in some stores this month. Misty and Paul Espinoza of Golden Bough are writing songs for a Firebird album that should be ready in February.

Baen is re-issuing The Lark & the Wren, Knight of Ghosts and Shadows by Misty and Ellen Guon, and Born to Run, by Misty and Larry, as well as the Wing Commander novel by Misty and Ellen, Freedom Flight, and the Misty/Piers Anthony collaboration, If I Pay Thee Not in Gold, all in paperback.

Coming late in 1997 are Beyond World's End, written with Ellen Guon (a sequel to Knight of Ghosts and Shadows) and a Bardic Voices book, Four and Twenty Blackbirds. Release dates have not been set for either.

Also from Baen and in bookstores now is Josepha Sherman's sequel to The Shattered Oath, Forging the Runes. Lois McMaster Bujold's Shards of Honor and Barrayar has been released in one volume as Cordelia's Honor, and the new Miles Vorkosigan adventure, Memory, is available in hardcover.

Firebird Music has cassettes and CD's of the songs of Oathbound back in stock. This work is based on the first book of Vows and Honor. The re-issue of songs inspired by Oathbreakers will be ready sometime next year. The Vows and Honor Concordance is still a work in progress. "Heralds, Harpers, & Havoc" is available on CD, as is "Lovers, Lore & Loss" and "Shadow Stalker." Soon to come is a Shadow Stalker Songbook.

Do your holiday shopping from the Firebird catalog. You'll find T-shirts for every taste, from TEMPEST designs to the Fairgrove logo, from the Silver Gryphon emblem to Skandranon and Companions, from beautiful Celtic and Michael Whelan designs to wolves and cats. Of course there's music: TEMPEST, various Celtic artists, Michael Longcor, native American music by R. Carlos Nakai and others, and the theme music from the film Ladyllawke. You can order all of Misty's books from Firebird as well as an Arrows of the Queen Concordance or songbook, Silver Gryphon patches and pins, related jewelry and stationery, and more.

Check out the Firebird on-line catalog at [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] for the most up to date product information. E-mail orders maybe sent to[Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] . To reach Firebird by phone use [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] . Firebird's address is [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] .

There are few recipes I'll actually use in Serve it Forth--Cooking with Anne McCaffrey, but I did have fun reading it. Katherine Kurtz's Spice Cake and Drop Scones sound really good, as do Lois Bujold's Sherried Walnut Cake and Peter Beagle's Legendary Minestrone, but Jerry Oltion's Liquid Nitrogen Grapefruit Sorbet? Allen Steele's Night of the Living Meatloaf? I don't think so. Misty and Larry provided two recipes that clearly reflect their busy life style. All authors included in the book have agreed to donate their profits to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America's Emergency Medical Fund.

Misty assures me that she and Larry will be at Dragon*Con this coming June, but I have no further information for you at this time.

TEMPEST will be in Fremont at Club Kaos [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] at 9:30 on November 15; in Orangevale at The Boardwalk [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] at 9:30 on 11/16; in San Francisco at Paradise Lounge [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] at 9 pm 11/21; in Fresno at Club Fred [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] at 9:30 on 11/22; in Modesto at State Theatre [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] at 8 pm 11/23; in Boulder Creek at Brewery [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] at 9:30 on December 7; in Bakersfield at The Dore Theatre CSUB Campus [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] at 8 pm on 12/13; in Los Angeles at Molly Malone's [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] 9 pm on 12/14; in Mammoth at La Sierra Cantina [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] 9 pm December 19-21. Call [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] for information on other TEMPEST gigs or visit their new web site at [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] . The blank space in TEMPEST's web address is supposed to be a tilde. I've tried three different ways to put a tilde in that address, but my printer won't accept it. The tilde shows up on the screen, the printer turns it into a "D" Is there a solution? (A very simple solution, please.)

Do you want to know what conventions are going to be held where and when? QO member Jason Burnett tells me that regretfully, Filthy Pierre's "SF Conventional Register" has ceased publication (after 22 years!). There are other sources. According to the October issue of Science Fiction Chronicle, conventions are listed in Scott Merritt's "ConTemporal." Subscription prices for that are $15 for 4 quarterly, $20 for 6 monthly, or $30 for 12 monthly issues. Make checks payable to "Pegasus Publis" and mail them to [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] . SFC is "the science fiction and fantasy newsmagazine" and is available in bookstores and magazine stands. It has book reviews, release dates, a listing of markets for you would-be--wrlters, and some convention news. Single copy price is $3.50.

COLLEGIUM NEWS:

We have individual handout sheets for the aspiring Herald, Bard, Healer, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, White Winds Sorcerer/ess, and Mercenary, and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald. Not sure of what you want to be? Extra point requirements vary on each handout according to the skills needed, but basic requirements are the same.

I. Develop a character - Develop a character (your persona - who would you be if you could daydream yourself into the world of Velgarth'?) and write about him/her. Prepare a minimum of 3 double-spaced pages, on 8.5 x 11 paper or its equivalent. If you can't type, please write or print as clearly as possible. This is a biography. Describe your persona's physical and emotional characteristics, likes and dislikes, whatever makes you uniquely you. You may use first or third person. (10 points)

II. Develop one or more friend or relative characters - You needn't be quite so detailed in your descriptions of these other characters. But remember, you are writing about people you know well. Describe what your family and/or friends look like, their own character traits, etc. Again, a minimum of 3 pages. (5 points)

By the time you've finished these basic requirements you should know if your persona is destined to be Herald, Healer, Bard, Shin'a'in . . . Send a SASE to the QO address and specify which handout you are requesting. Please, one to a customer. Club dues pay for paper and photocopying.

By the way, it's Misty and Ellen Guon who qualify for Herald-Mage, Adept class, NOT yours truly. Misty dubbed me "Herald Housemother", and it's the only title I feel I've earned.

From Herald Housemother:

"Expectations are premature resentments.&uqot;--Ann Wilson Schaef. I expected more news on Dragon*Con by now; several people had promised to keep me informed, and I was not in a good mood when I started typing this newsletter. During a break away from the computer I discovered Ms. Schaef's words. I know nothing about Ms. Schaef, but this quotation got my attention as if it were meant for me alone. How about it, QOC folks? If I surrender my expectations, maybe you'll surprise me for the next issue? I need hotel information, a registration address . . .

One of my hardest jobs is deciding how much editing to do on messages me for the newsletter. If the spelling or grammar of a Fan Message needs work I usually fix it but sometimes I can't tell if what I consider a mistake was meant to attract attention. As for zine ads . . . I fix typos but you as potential submitters/subscribers have a right to know if a would-be editor is careless or ignorant. In other words folks, please proofread what you send me, especially if you're using creatively spelled persona names. I do try very hard to send out each issue free of mistakes, but the gremlins almost always sneak something past me.

Expected mailing date for the December issue is 12/7. 1997 mailing dates are 1/11, 2/22, 4/5, 5/17, 6/21, 8/2, 9/13, 10/25, and 12/6. When you pay your dues I count forward nine issues and put that date on your mailing label. How early can you renew your dues? Whenever you want, but please, not for more than two years. The January 1999 issue will have a new editor/treasurer/president/whatever. (Not a new Herald Housemother, I refuse to give up that title!)
