Heyla, Misty fans!

We are devouring the new book about Skif (Take a Thief), and we hope the rest of you are enjoying it as well! As soon as several of us read it, we’ll open a place in our private Delphi forum where QO members can discuss this latest installment from the Valdemar series.

We hope to have the chat list up and running again soon. We’re also hoping to get the webrings working again in the near future. If you are on AOL, please pop over to the Arrows On Line section and post (See instructions for finding Arrows in the ad below.). We have to keep the area active if we don’t want it to go away. In the meantime, things are quite active in the QO Delphi Forum, and we encourage all members to visit and post.

We’ve had two chapters/zines shut down recently (The Pacific Northwest Collegium’s Collegium Chronicles and Golden Grove, the California Chapter). If anyone is interested in helping revive these chapters and their publications, please contact us at Legend@malcor.com.

Since September 11th, we have received many moving messages from you folks. One story in particular stuck out, and we wanted to share it with you. Herald Belprin asked us to include his e-mail address so you can contact him directly.

We hope everyone has an enjoyable Sovvan Night (Samhain/Halloween)! Danya will be dressing up as a Herald; Moonstar is still deciding. If you take pictures of yourselves in costumes, send them to us! We’d love to post them.

Zhai'helleva,

Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

Heyla,

I am a Peace Corps volunteer who was evacuated from Kyrgyzstan. This small and, largely unheard of, country lies just east of Uzbekistan, just south of Khazakhstan, and less than two hundred miles north of Afghanistan. Although I left for Kyrgystan on June 6, Kyrgyzstan had become home for me and my wife. We lived in a city called Naryn. I taught high school English (English as a Foreign Language) at a lyceum--a boarding school. My wife was a consultant for a Non-governmental Organization support center (mainly supported by Counterpart Consortium).

Let me tell you a bit about the people I lived and worked with. The national language is Kyrgyz, although the language used in government and business is Russian. In Naryn, few people actually spoke Russian. The city is one of the remotest cities in Kyrgyzstan. My fellow English teachers were relatively small in size. When I arrived on a site visit during training, they and my school's director took me to a mountain park called Salkin-Tor. The picnic lasted from 11 in the morning until about 7 in the evening. During this picnic we walked along mountain trails, ate traditional foods (Plov and Besh Barmok), and talked about everything from cultural differences to the purposes of having a language.

When school started, I taught high school grades 8 through 11 (they have no 12th grade). My kids were very enthusiastic about learning English. The classes were high energy. I taught everything from simple sentences to the basics of literature. The students absorbed everything about America as if they were dying of thirst and the information was the purest water. When I started an English Club, students from other schools in the city came to practice their English, read books, play chess and other games, and just hang out. It is difficult to describe the level of love and respect I felt from them.

My colleagues were fabulous. They helped me get used to living in a country where the average income was roughly equivalent to $20/month. When I was learning the language, they helped me with translations. When I started teaching, they helped me learn school policies and procedures. They helped me decorate my classroom. In short, they became almost a second family.

When the tragedy of September 11th occurred, the whole school was called into the central square. An announcement was made concerning the tragedy. Fortunately, I had been told the night before by Peace Corps. Everyone else was shocked. For the longest time, I heard little else but condolences and good wishes. But despite the tragedy, classes continued. Life, though temporarily subdued, went on. English classes still had energy. English club attracted more students every session.

Volunteers were bereaved about the tragedy. It was almost incomprehensible. From the safety of Kyrgyzstan, and there was no fear of personal safety from ANY volunteer, the tragedy was almost incomprehensible. The event was seen as sublimely horrific. Even so, we had absolutely no personal fear. Depression abounded. But when we were evacuated, we all felt intense bereavement. We could not have been more disheartened if our families (in both countries) were dead. It is difficult to tell who was hurt more after the evacuation--the volunteers or the locals at our sites. In many ways, these people meant more to us than any other group of people. They were even more horrified by the events than we were. They mourned with us. They comforted us. They became friends so close, that leaving them was akin to dividing ourselves in half.

The second goal of Peace Corps is to share American culture with the host countries. The third goal is to bring parts of the host countries to America. The easiest part of being a Peace Corps Volunteer is going to a new country and sharing skills and knowledge. The hardest part, in this situation, is to show people what the common person feels. The new task of all the evacuated volunteers is to fight the inevitable prejudice and hard heartedness. Nevertheless, this is our new assignment, and this letter is my first step along that path.

Sincerely,
Herald Belprin

Krin's Base Camp by L.A. Malcor

From Healer Adept Moonstar:

Heyla, all!

I have been keeping busy with lots of guests. Now that I am in California, everyone wants to visit. I am looking at about 8 to 12 guests visiting over the next year or so. A couple of them are from overseas, which I am particularly excited about, one from Holland and one from France.

I had a wonderful visit with Laura Cameron. She came to stay a couple of weeks, though everyone was wishing that she could have stayed longer. She painted a beautiful mural on my closet doors. There is a large castle on the center door with a Herald and Companion on the right door sitting on the bank of a lake, on the left a beautiful mountain scene. She spent nearly the entire two weeks on the painting. I think it measures about 6 feet by 12 feet. She also painted a dragon’s eye protection symbol over my front door. Somehow she even found time to paint some fish and seahorses as well as put up some wallpaper fish that I had bought in my son’s room.

We still found time to go to Medieval Times the last night she was here and watched the evil green knight win the tournament. I bought the group picture <grin>. I am going to post a “Kenny and Friends” page on my website pretty soon.

The other big news is that I will be attending school online to get my Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. I started on the 18th of October. I have been considering finishing school for several years and finally have decided to take a deep breath and do it.

I hope that everyone has lots of turkey at Thanksgiving, and don’t forget to pass the mashed potatoes. Have a wonderful holiday everyone!

Hugs-

Moonstar

Fan Messages:

The newsletter is routinely posted to the Net. If you are concerned about your address falling into unfriendly hands, don't place a fan message! You may answer fan messages without ever placing one yourself. The editors reserve the right to edit--and shorten!--all messages. (Remember to tell your Post Office about your alternative name if you wish to receive mail addressed to your persona at an addressed where you receive mail under your real name.)

The only "fee" for a fan message is to write to two other people. If your mailbox is empty, don't complain--write letters!
