Heyla, Misty fans!
We're sorry that the next issue of The Compass Rose is not online yet and that the last issue of the newsletter still has to be coded. Herald-Mage Danya's computer is in the process of turning itself into a boat anchor, however. Those publications will be available online soon after she manages to get a new laptop.
In the meantime, there is much to report. Misty is hoping for her next hardback to be released in March or April. Amazon.com says that the paperback edition of Brightly Burning will be out in June, but we might get lucky and see that sooner. Keep watch on our Mercedes Lackey pages of the Dragonlord's Bookstore at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/bkfanml.htm.
Queen's Own continues to grow. We have more than tripled our mailing list since our first online newsletter went out online in May 1, 2000. Longtime members from the original club continue to find us online and rejoin. Visit the persona page (http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qolist.htm) to see which memberships have been activated. If you happen to know any of the owners/creators of personae who are not activated yet, please let those folks know where we are. Anyone who created an approved persona is entitled to full, free membership in QO. We simply have to have them contact us with their e-mail address. New members are joining as well. Check the Collegium News section of this newsletter for our latest additions. (We know of about three dozen folk who are working on personae as well.)
The Herald's Waystation (http://deserthorses.com/heraldswaystation) is open for business in Texas! You can read details about the newest QO chapter in the Local Chapter section. Be sure to visit their marvelous site! (How's that Northeastern US chapter coming along? Haven't heard from you folks in a while.)
A surprise that's dear to our hearts is the planned return of Companions' Grove. Members of the original QO club fondly remember this 'zine as one of the best Misty fanzines ever. We've had a new member Devin Harris contact the original publisher, Lynn Tucker, and obtain permission to revive the publication. You can find submission information in the Fanzine section below.
Be sure to check out the QO Delphi Forum and the QO chat list, if you haven't already done so. Group trips to Ren. Faires are being planned, Midsummer festivals, QO sections of cons, online chat sessions, coffee break discussions at Barnes & Noble, Medieval Times outings and other fun things are being planned at locations all over the world. We've found patterns for people to use to make Heraldic Whites, and some people have volunteered to be local seamstresses/tailors. The hunt is also on for suitable boots. Don't miss out on the fun with your fellow Misty fans!
This month's interview is with our very own Herald Alora and one of the best-loved and prolific artists in Misty fandom. Her drawings have graced many QO publications, and you have seen some of her work in our online newsletter.
Zhai'helleva,
Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar
I joined QO in May of 1992.
I got into Misty's books mainly due to the fact it revolved around horses and magic. I started with the Arrows trilogy. I became emotionally tied to the characters and storylines, and I truly loved all of her books.
I read a lot of fantasy, starting when I was very young. I have always loved unicorns and pegasi, and etc. A natural progression, to delve into books and escape to other worlds and lives . . . I don't read as much as I used to unfortunately, but I do have many books yet to read and there are always more I yearn to explore.
I like various kinds of music, but the majority tends to be '80's, soundtracks, traditional, alternative, and New Age. I absolutely adore Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, and so many others.
The first con I attended was the Worlds Fantasy Convention "94 in Berkeley, CA. QO had a gathering there, and I met Misty. I've attended few cons or similar events, but hope to be able to attend more in the future.
I do not sell my artwork at cons mainly because I haven't attended many and I would like to be there in person to oversee such an art show and get feedback from the con attendees. I do want to attend and be a part of con art shows once I am in a better position to do so and offer an array of quality artwork. I have sold my artwork through friends and family, and some freelancing in general. Also, I've entered a few art contests and a couple of art shows as well.
Many things inspire my artwork. Books, stories, book covers, the media, music, many other artists give me inspiration and ideas, and just having a good imagination! Also, my family and friends inspire me.
Currently I have not attended any art college, but it has always been my goal and continues to be. I have taken art classes throughout junior and high school and a couple of private painting classes. It mainly comes from a natural ability, or artistic talent, and many years of unending practice and expression. As for mentors, my mom was the artist of the family and has always encouraged me. Along the way there have been art teachers and other artists that have bestowed upon me knowledge and support.
The process I go through is I usually have an idea, which I sketch out or write down my thoughts about. Then when I actually can focus on devoting time to my art I start drawing the idea or image(s) out. I am rather a perfectionist and often try to be too precise, but when I'm happy with the pencil drawing I shade it in, or go over it with pens for a black and white image. Sometimes I paint or color pencil the work, or leave it unfinished when I'm undecided. At times I just start with a blank piece of paper and a pencil, and really have no set objective. I have several sheets of paper with written ideas yet to be drawn upon.
Besides projects for QO I also produce art for the club N3F, other newsletters and amateur presses, and some charities as well (animal-related). Mainly I try to draw for myself and for my own need for expression, self-exploration and well being. I do like having others to share my creations with through fandom and beyond.

We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm.
You need a release form (online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qomlrel2.htm) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.
All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to Legend@malcor.com and healermoon@gmail.com.
This morning I noticed that my email box was woefully empty. That is that I have no submissions for the Art Contest. With all of our wonderful artists this is a little surprising to me. You have two more weeks to submit. In case you missed the details of the contest here they are again.

All Artwork must be submitted by March 15, 2001. Herald-Mage Danya Winterborn and myself will decide the winner no later than April 1, 2001.

Multiple submissions are allowed. This can definitely increase your odds of winning. I know you guys are worried your art "isn't going to be good enough." You are all wonderful artists and have an equal chance of winning. Please submit.
In other news, I am still gearing up for my move in early June. I just took a four day seminar with my husband about transitioning out of the military. Surprise is that there are at least three more meetings we have to attend to get ready to move and learn about terminal leave and pay. Plenty to keep me busy. I still love hearing from you all, but I have noticed my response time can be up to 10 days. Don't think I have forgotten you.
Hugs-
Moonstar
The newsletter is routinely posted to the Net. If you are concerned about your address falling into unfriendly hands, don't place a fan message! You may answer fan messages without ever placing one yourself. The editors reserve the right to edit--and shorten!--all messages. (Remember to tell your Post Office about your alternative name if you wish to receive mail addressed to your persona at an addressed where you receive mail under your real name.)
The only "fee" for a fan message is to write to two other people. If your mailbox is empty, don't complain--write letters!
