Companion by Laura Felton

Heyla, Misty fans!

This month it's my turn to play interviewer. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Kendra Renaud, the person behind the persona of Healer Adept Moonstar.

Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn

  1. Tell us about your family.

I moved in with my husband, Jay, a week and a half after I met him. We met at a local Laundromat, in Cheyenne, Wyoming where I had moved after high school. He was on his first assignment in the Air Force as a deputy combat crew commander in the nuclear missiles field. He was 23, and I was 18. We got married exactly one year after we met: 23 July 1993.

In June 1996 we moved to Vandenberg AFB near Lompoc, about two-and-a-half hours north of Los Angeles on the coast. We completely fell in love with California and went often to the beach.

We decided to try for a child in June 1997. After a few miscarriages and a wonderful doctor we were able to stay pregnant the last time in late 1998. I was six months pregnant when we moved to Great Falls, Montana in January 1999. In April 1999, I gave birth to our beautiful baby boy, Alexander. You can view his pictures on my web page at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Dunes/7913/.

Our family also includes three large dogs. Two Great Danes, Hero a four-year-old Brindle and Shade a 3 1/2 year old Black. They have natural ears. We also have a 6 1/2-year-old shepherd mix, Sasha. We also have two cats. A brother and sister pair I bought in Santa Barbara. They are Bengals, 3 years old and their names are Sagan, the boy, and Sparks his little sister.

Our little family is planning to leave the Air Force sometime between early-2001 and mid-2002. This has a lot to do with Jay's skills and job opportunities. We are planning a move to Southern California, Orange County, where our hearts already await us.

  2. What is your educational background?

I started college at 16, the summer after my sophomore year in 1990. I went to the local community college, the AIMS outreach, in Loveland, Colorado. When I could afford it I went, I went to Laramie County Community College when I lived in Cheyenne, also known by locals as the "Last Chance Cowboy College." And I graduated from Allan Hancock Community College in Santa Maria California with a Liberal Arts Associates degree in June 1998. I do plan on going back to school when Alex starts school in 2004. I am interested in many things but plan to get a double major: Computer Science and English with a minor in Spanish.

  3. Why did you choose to save Queen's Own?

I have made some of my best friends through Queen's Own. I had thought about saving Queen's Own in 1998 when Judith broached the topic to me. I knew, however, I couldn't do it myself, faced with probable moves every 2-3 years. As Linda and I became closer friends we lamented that we hadn't rescued Queen's Own sooner. When we learned that Queen's Own had gone bankrupt we realized what a good team we could be. All and all I couldn't give up on the club that gave me so much fun, so many reasons to write and so many friends.

  4. When did you join Queen's Own?

I joined Queen's Own in late 1995, mostly out of curiosity. I noticed the Queen's Own address in the back of Arrows of the Queen. I decided to take a chance.

  5. What got you hooked on Misty’s books?

I had read the Last Herald Mage trilogy in Junior High. My best friend, Misty (interesting coincidence don't you think?), gave me Magic's Pawn at lunch one day and said, "Here, Kendra. You'll like this book. The main character is gay." I just looked at her in shock. I had never been given a book in that way, but she was right. I fell in love with Vanyel. (Didn't we all?) A few years later I came across the Arrows trilogy at a used bookstore. Then I read every Valdemar novel I could find!

  6. What else do you read?

I love Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series; I always know it will be time to move soon when they come out. They seem to come out just as Jay gets a new assignment. I can't wait for the next Harry Potter book. Besides my obvious love for fantasy, I also really like the classics: Dickens, Bronte, Shakespeare, and many more. I read nonfiction reference books on dog breeds. Occasionally I will pick up a novel of a recent film. Although I must say Alex is a big fan of "Touch and Feel" books, and I read several of them, several times a day.

  7. What types of music do you listen to?

I listen to a little of everything. I really like country music (Living in Cheyenne for four years will do that to anyone.). I also like alternative music; "Surfer Girl" by Homegrown is one of my favorite songs. I like 80s music, and classical, and oldies, and filk, and well, pretty much everything else. I listen to Lou Bega at least once a day. It is the only way Alex lets me shower in peace. Alex loves Dance/Club music just like his daddy.

  8. What was the first con you went to?

Actually, I have only been to one con. I can't remember what it was called. It was a little one at the Colorado State University Student Center. I think it was in 1996 right before we moved to California. Jay was in the field, and I went with my good friends, Pete and Andy. We ended up in a Mage game. We had never played Mage before, but having played Vampire it wasn't a big jump. Those present voted me best role-player of the game.

  9. What other projects besides Queen’s Own occupy your time?

I am on the Board of Dragonlords of Dumnonia for Linda's fan club, which includes approving personas, putting together timelines, and keeping up numerous lists. I also work with the Idaho Great Dane Rescue Inc. So far this year I have rescued three pups, and they have all been placed in safe, happy loving homes. I also write articles for the Pagan newsletter, "Silver Chalice." I write and submit to the various chapter zines listed in our newsletter. I maintain a web site. I love to keep our photos scrapbook style, and I have one family set and one for Alex that I have just started. Not to mention that I also keep house and take care of my fourteen month old son, Alex.

  10. What do you like the best about Queen’s Own?

For me it is all about the great people I get to meet and the wonderful writing I get to read. I like getting in contact with all those people that share the same interests as I do. As a military spouse, I don't really fit the mold, and I move too much. Both of these things make it difficult to make many good friends. Among Queen's Own I always have friends and people who help me through moves and trying to settle again. Thanks everyone for helping us. Without you, there wouldn't be a club.

Collegium News:

We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm.

You need a release form (online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qomlrel2.htm) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.

All personae materials should be sent to the QO address.

From Healer Adept Moonstar:

I read all of the Misty fanzines listed in our chapters section. I recommend them all. As a zine editor for over four years, I have found the biggest obstacle in putting a zine together is lack of submissions. I know many of you are wonderful authors and artists. Please send your stories, poems and art to our chapter zines.

Remember your stories need a release sent to High Flight. Always make copies of your release. Send the original, which MUST have your signature to High Flight. Send a copy with your story to the zine to which you are submitting and keep a copy for yourself, in case you wish to send the story to another zine in the future. If/when you submit a persona, please send us a copy of the release as well. High Flight will NOT send your original release back to you. They file it for their own records. Artwork and poetry does not need a release.

In short, keep writing! I look forward to seeing your work.
