Dear Misty Fans,

Border Art If you're a Queen's Own member, there should be a New Year's greeting from Misty and Larry tucked in with your newsletter. (It's the reason for the large envelope). The postcard shows the Feathered Serpent, a Larry Dixon design. It's the cover art for the CD "Freedom, Flight & Fantasy" and is also available on a T-shirt or as an art print, sold by Firebird of course.

The Eagle and the Nightingales is now in your bookstore (unless it's sold out already). Isn't a new Misty book a wonderful way to start off the New Year? The Black Gryphon is available now in paperback, as is The Robin and the Kestrel.

The Sci Fi Reading Group of the Livingston New Jersey Barnes & Noble will be reading Bardic Voices One: The Lark and the Wren at 8:30 on Wednesday, January 25th. Call [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] for directions.

For you on the West Coast, the bookstore Mysterious Galaxy will feature a display of Bardic Voices Three: The Eagle and the Nightingales in the dealers room of the convention CON-DOR and will have feathered masks for sale. CON-DOR is February 24-26 at the Town & Country Hotel in San Diego. Send a SASE to Con-Dor [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] for registration information. Jennifer Roberson is GoH (Guest of Honor).

Firebird Arts and Music carries all of Misty's books, gryphon mugs and T-shirts, the "Heralds, Harpers, & Havoc" songbook, "Shadow Stalker" on cassette or CD, TEMPEST's latest, "Surfing to Mecca," and much, much more. For ordering information or a catalog call [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.].

From Tanya Huff comes Sing the Four Quarters, an excellent book with a Jody Lee cover. Tanya is the author of the Victory Nelson stories: Blood Price, Blood Trail, Blood Lines, Blood Pact and more. For information on Tanya's fan club, send a SASE to NINE ABOVE! [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.].

There is a Victory Nelson story in, the anthology Vampire Detectives, edited by Martin H. Greenberg. The anthology was released last November--or will be released this April. I'm as confused as you are since my notes give me both dates.

Mike Resnick, Martin H. Greenberg, and Loren Estleman are the editors of Deals with the Devil. It contains "Small Print.", a story by Misty & Larry and was released last year. My apologies for not telling you about this one sooner.

Josepha Sherman's collection of folktales, Once Upon a Galaxy, is available now. The ad in LOCUS features these words by Misty: "A clear and cleverly written, intelligent guide to the roots of all mythic literature, this book should be on the shelves of every reader of science fiction and fantasy Josepha Sherman is the common man's Joseph Campbell." And from Booklist: "This delightful anthology uses folktales from around the world to demonstrate the ages-old heritage of modern science fiction and fantasy. The whole effort is so successful that the only complaint that might be made is that 40 stories are too few." If Once Upon a Galaxy is not in your bookstore, o: der directly from August House by calling [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.].

The Book of Earth is by Marjorie B. Kellogg. 1 know nothing about the author, but 1'm buying the hook for the Jody Lee cover. Wait until you sec her dragon! Jody did the cover for Claire Bell's The Jaguar Princess.

If you especially enjoy a book or cover art, write to the author or artist AND the publisher. (You Can write to any author or artist in care of his/her publisher.) We all need positive feedback.

Lois Bujold's Mirror Dance will be out in pap. rback in March. This is science fiction. not fantasy, but I dare you to read anything of Lois's and not care about her characters as you do Misty's. Miles is certainly Herald material!

MENTORS:

I asked a year ago for Mentors to answer those questions to which I can only say, "I have no idea!" The response was terrific, but too often the list has been omitted from the NL because of lack of space. I will attempt to feature a few Mentors in every issue this vear. If you would like your name removed from the Mentor list, please drop me a line. If anyone else is willing to answer questions in a particular area of fannish interest, please write. Thank you all for your help.

When writing to a Mentor, remember to include a SASE and be as specific as possible with your questions.

From Herald Housemother:

Happy New Year! May 1995 bring us all good health, good friends, and good hooks (and time to read them!)

Thank you, all who sent holiday greetings. Your cards were pinned to red ribbons that I hung around the doors and windows. They gave the house a very festive appearance. (They look so nice that I haven't taken then, down yet.)

Call [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] for information on blood drives in your area. During this time of year donations seem to decline while the need for life saving blood increases. Giving blood is relatively painless and takes very little time. And yes, I take my own advice and am a regular donor.

Send your news and messages for the February NL by the fourth. I need a few days to write the newsletter, I like to give Trout Printing at least three days to print the newsletter, and I pick it up the Friday afternoon before the Mailing Day date. Eventually, dues will have to be raised, probably next fall. Besides the increase in postage there's been a constant increase in the cost of paper. The newsletter is printed at Trout Printing in Millville, and the folks there are very good to me, but they have to pass their added cost on to me, and I'm going to have to pass it along to you.

Your dues pay for the newsletter and postage, obviously. They also pay for office supplies - pens, paper for handouts, post-its, address labels, envelopes, file folders, etc, - and a subscription to LOCUS. I donate my time (and Steve's, bless his tolerant heart) and pay for gas (the print shop is 20 miles away), phone calls, computer repair and lots of other odds and ends.

When writing to me about your membership, PLEASE let me know how your name appears on your address label. I had an unpleasant time with someone who assured me she had paid and wasn't going to pay twice. 1 spent an hour or two going through back records trying to find her name and found nothing. Later I got a note from her casually mentioning that she had paid under a different name. Yes, I'm still annoyed, I expect to spend a lot of time on QO, but I hate wasting my time - I could have been reading!

We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, and Bards, and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald. Guidelines for Tayledras and Shin'a'in are incomplete but are enough to get you started. Send a SASE to the Guardian's NEW ADDRESS: Guardian of the Web [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.] or to QO and specify which handout you are requesting. No SASE, no answer!

Creativity in achieving extra credit points is admired but please follow the. basic rules for your persona.

You need a release form (send the Guardian or me a SASE) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem, or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty at Highflight [Ed. note 2005: Out-of-date info withheld.]. Do NOT include the release form with your persona material, send it to Misty.

Herald material should be sent to the QO address, only Herald-Mage personas to the Guardian of the Web.
