Welmoon by Lass Starchild De'tempest

Heyla, Misty fans!

Our deepest sympathy is with the family and friends of the astronauts of Columbia, the space shuttle that was lost this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

On a much happier note, this newsletter marks the 15th anniversary of the founding of Queen’s Own! For those of you who keep track of such things, we now have 577 approved personae (counting the ones approved in this newsletter), and 120 active members. Happy Birthday, Queen’s Own!

We have a new chapter opening! The infamous Illinois Arrow chapter is being adopted by returning member Herald Mari Kathryn Lewell. The name is changing to Heartland Arrows. See below for more details.

Herald Mari has also graciously volunteered to head up the project of bringing back the Queen’s Own buttons! These are buttons that were for sale to QO members so we could wear them to cons and other events as a means of identifying fellow QO members. Herald Mari writes: "Artists wanted: I am coordinating a project to prepare buttons for QO members to wear at conventions to identify themselves. A contest will run from Feb 1-20, and artwork needs to be submitted via e-mail. Information including requirements and submission instructions can be found at http://www.marymuse.com/HeartlandArrows/contest.html."

The German chapter is still forming (The founding members are busily working on their personae.). Does anyone have current information on the Florida chapter that is forming as well?

Teri Lee of Firebird Arts and Music (http://www.firebirdarts.com) writes: "Work is currently being done on the new Valdemar CD. Sun & Shadow will feature the magical collaboration between Mercedes Lackey and Paul Espinoza and Margie Butler from Golden Bough. Paul and Margie have been involved in much of the Valdemar music, including stepping in at the last moment and doing an amazing job on Heralds, Harpers & Havoc. Sun and Shadow tells the story of Sunsinger and Shadowdancer. Pre-orders are being currently being accepted, with a release date sometime this year, depending on everybody's work schedule. If time allows Misty will write a short introduction, and there will be a Jody Lee cover for the album."

By way of book news, Misty is working on Exile’s Valor, the second Alberich book, which will fill in the gap between Exile’s Honor and Take a Thief. A Valdemar short story collection, which includes a novella by Misty about how Talia became a Priestess of the Sun, is also in the works. Other projects in progress include Phoenyx and Ashes (in the Elemental Mage series), Shadow Mountain (a brand new series), This Rough Magic (Vol. Two of the Heirs of Alexandria series), This Scepter’d Isle (a SERRAted edge novel), Stoned Souls (another SERRAted Edge novel), Mad Maudlin (a Bedlam’s Bard book), and A Circus of Witches (the sequel to James Schmitz’s The Witches of Karres).

There was a time in the far past where someone wrote the name "Queen’s Own" in Seax runes for our newsletter. We have been contacted by a scholar with the following offer: "If any of you are serious academicians of the Beagnoth Seax or Thames Scramasax, I should be delighted to correspond with you. I probably have studied that Furthoc more intimately than anyone else in the world." So if there is anyone in our membership who would like to take advantage of this offer, contact me at Legend@malcor.com, and I will put you in touch with this gentleman.

Our interviewee for this newsletter is Herald Kevyn Micahsdaughter (Julianna J. "JJ" Routhier). Enjoy!

Zhai'helleva and Happy Valentine’s Day,

Herald-Mage Adept Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

  1. When did you join Queen's Own?

My persona was approved in December of 2002, though I had originally looked into joining Queen's Own way back in 1998. I somehow lost track of things, and finally found my way to the website a few months ago (sometime around August or September 2002).

  2. What got you hooked on Misty's books?

I have been a member of the Science Fiction Book Club for many years, and they offered the 3-in-1 edition of Queen's Own as a featured selection several years ago (This was way back when I was still in high school, if I remember correctly, so it had to be about 10 years ago, now.). It looked interesting (At that time, I had no idea who Mercedes Lackey was.), so I ordered it. After that, I started checking out all the Mercedes Lackey books I could find from the library.

  3. What else do you read?

I'm a big fan of Anne McCaffrey (I also play several characters on PernWorld MUSH.). I enjoy most fantasy, sci-fi, and some horror novels as well.

  4. What types of music do you listen to?

I listen primarily to Country, but my tastes are rather eclectic and include Disney and movie/Broadway soundtracks, 'new age', some pop and alternative, and various other stuff. Favorite artists include Garth Brooks, Enya, Infected Mushroom, Information Society, and Aerosmith.

  5. What movies do you enjoy?

It'd probably be easier to say what movies I don't enjoy. I like just about anything animated (including Anime), sci-fi or fantasy, action, musicals, comedy, some horror, and even some drama films. No specific favorites, because the list is way too long to mention here.

  6. What was the first con you went to?

The first convention I attended was a Star Trek convention back in '91 (I think?). I attended a role-playing con called Winter Fantasy in January '94, U-Con in '99, and ICC (the International Camarilla Convention) in 2000. I'm also an entertainer at the Silverleaf Renaissance Faire, but I've never actually been to a fantasy con.

  7. Why did you get involved in fandom?

It's really more the creative aspect that got me involved rather than the 'fan' aspect. I enjoy creating personae and writing stories and such, plus I really like to show my support for authors whose work I especially admire.

  8. What do you like best about fandom?

In this particular case, it's the opportunity to create a character and share that with others around the world with similar interests.

  9. What other things besides Queen's Own occupy your time?

Well, besides being the mother of an energetic 2-1/2-year-old daughter, I work part time in a group home for developmentally disabled and mentally impaired adults. In my free time, I enjoy role-playing with friends (both with our table-top group and online), reading, and heading out to the barn to work with my horse.

  10. What types of things would you like to see Queen's Own do in the coming years?

I'd like to see more conventions and clubs organized or hosted by members of QO. I think it'd be fun to be able to meet some of you face-to-face and get to know each other better, swap stories, and generally have a good time. We also need to advertise somehow, and get more members, so that we can have the resources and manpower to do these things.

We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm.

You need a release form (online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qomlrel2.htm) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.

From Herald-Mage Adept Danya Winterborn:

Happy Valentine’s Day! This month also sees Imbolc/Candlemas/St. Brigid’s Day (depending on which name you prefer), President’s Day (I’m old enough to remember Lincoln’s Birthday and Washington’s Birthday as separate holidays <g>.), Eid al Adha, and Flag Day (as well as a few more that I’ve probably forgotten <G>). It seems everyone is in the mood to celebrate something, whether it be the (hoped-for) beginning of spring, a religious event, political symbols or love in general. Seems like a lot to be packed into the shortest month of the year!

February is always an extremely busy time for me. My husband and I both have birthdays this month, and I’ve lost track of how many of my cousins were also born around this time of year. We seem to float from one party to another on our weekends, and we even have a few celebrations during the week! I’m always amazed when I manage to get anything else done.

As I hit my birthday, I find myself once again taking stock of what I’ve done with my life and what I plan for the future. I do hope to make Guardian rank some day, but I have my doubts about that happening in the next year while my children are still so young. I intend to get at least a few professional articles published, and I’m really trying to make some serious headway on my next nonfiction book. I hope this coming year will see me presenting at least one paper at a scholarly conference, and I would like to get to something in the way of a con (even if it’s a Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament to keep my six-year-old son happy <g>). I am planning to attend the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Anyone up for making this a Queen’s Own event? If so, contact me at Legend@malcor.com, and we can kick around some possible dates.

Zhai’helleva,

Danya
