Heyla, Misty fans!

Lots of stuff has been happening around QO since the first of the year. There is a major update of the Website underway, based on information from The Valdemar Companion. The Helpful Handouts are being revised. You might want to take a glance at the Handout for your persona type when we get the new ones up to see if there are Advanced Ranks or more details that you’d like to add to your existing persona. You can find the handouts at:

http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm

We’re also working on those FAQ sheets that we’ve been promising people for ages! Rather than putting "Under Construction" on several dozen pages, we’re simply working on the pages online. So please bear with us as things update, work, don’t work, and otherwise change over the next few weeks. The "Just the FAQs" section of the website will be at:

http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qojust.htm

The Vanyel Fan Club is back! Queen’s Own is hosting it’s website. See their ad below for the link. Also, the VFC is having a contest. Whoever submits the most stories to a QO zine or the most art to the QO newsletter in 2002 will win a copy of The Last Herald-Mage, the 3-in-1 volume of the Vanyel stories that was a hardcover special edition by GuildAmerica Books. Contact Danya at Legend@malcor.com for more details.

Queen’s Own will be hosting a chat in our Delphi Forum for QO members on Wedsnesday, February 6th, at 7 PM PACIFIC, 8 PM MOUNTIAN, 9 PM CENTRAL, and 10 PM EASTERN. The topic will be The Valdemar Companion. Mark your caldendars! We are also planning to have a chat at a time when our international folk can attend. (We’re still setting the date and time for that.) Contact Moonstar at healermoon@gmail.com for details.

We start our QO member interview series in this newsletter with questionnaire answers from a very special member: Queen’s Own founder, Herald-Housemother Judith Louvis! Enjoy!

Zhai'helleva,

Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

  1. When did you join Queen's Own?

I didn't: I started it! Our first newsletter was 1 page, sent to people who had written to DAW, Misty, or Terri Lee at Firebird in February 1988.

  2. What got you hooked on Misty's books?

Her characters. I identified with Talia; I became Talia while reading Arrows. No other author had gotten me so emotionally involved.

  3. What else do you read?

Sci-fi, mysteries . . . I used to read horror but today's headlines are horrible enough so I've switched to romances; I like the assurance of a happy ending.

  4. What types of music do you listen to?

I love classical, but I gotta admit I love country and western too. Also ethnic, filk, big bands . . . it depends on my mood.

  5. What movies do you enjoy?

I saw Shrek, The Mummy Returns and The Lord of the Rings and enjoyed them immensely. Most of my movie watching is the classics on TV.

  6. What was the first con you went to?

My first con was in Jackson MS (Springfest? 1989? I can't remember), and I went to meet Misty.

  7. Why did you get involved in fandom?

I needed some fun in my life, and I wanted to have friends who could see the value of imagination and of being silly.

  8. What do you like best about fandom?

Fandom is a great equalizer. Age, economic background, even geographic location are unimportant. It's the shared interest that brings us together.

  9. What other things besides Queen's Own occupy your time?

At the time I ran QO, nothing! My family was very tolerant of my "hobby." Now I am Grammy, not Herald-Housemother, and I can't wait until the grandkids are old enough to enjoy Misty's worlds.

  10. What types of things would you like to see Queen’s Own do in the coming years?

Ah, that's for you young folks to decide. I would like to see fandom in general return to the goal of having fun and being an outlet for creativity. Fandom is NOT a way of life; it's a way of play. All intelligent species need play!

Send $1.00 and a $0.34 stamp (or $1.00 and 2 IRCs) to Queen's Own, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA, 92652. Make checks payable to "Linda Malcor" in US funds only.

You can see their chatroom, Companion’s Grove, at that point, but to get to the message boards, click on Message Boards. For the Arrows message boards, click on Mercedes Lackey Fan Group (The other option, Mercedes Lackey’s Fiction, is a general discussion of Misty’s books and is not part of Arrows.). If you get lost or have additional questions, contact the Arrows Dean, Herald Ryhannon Gaia Degent, at MistyKalia@aol.com.

    • Austral'a'in: Austral'a'in is a chapter of QO that has been running for more than five years now. Despite the name, which is a combination of Latin and Shin'a'in for "People of the South", we don't just have members south of the equator. Rather, anyone is welcome! Snail Mail: Austral'a'in, c/o Cassandra Vuksa, P.O. Box 1850, Woden ACT 2606 Australia. E-mail: garou@netspeed.com.au.

We are not going to charge new members for the first 3 newsletters; after that it will be 75 cents per newsletter. We will also have an online, nonfiction newsletter. Look for details and other fun stuff when we launch our chapter website. Snail mail: Jan Tallevast, Rt 1 Box 137, Milford, Tx 76670. E-mail: heraldauralynn@hotmail.net and HeraldEnyo@gmail.com. Zines and Newsletters:

    • Austral'a'in: Editor: Cassandra Vuksa, P.O. Box 1850, Woden, ACT 2606, Australia, E-mail: garou@netspeed.com.au. We print fiction (both fanfic on Velgarth and other fantasy stories), poetry, art, reviews, recipes, articles, personas, penpal ads and stacks more! Each issue is eight pages (four double-sided) and you get eight issues a year for the measly cost of $8 Australian (or 8 x 45 cent stamps) for Australians, or $12 Australian (or 15 IRCs) for people overseas. (If you can't get Australian funds or IRCs, e-mail me, because we might be able to negotiate some other form of payment, such as CDs that are unavailable in Australia!) The cost of membership covers postage and printing - we're a strictly not-for-profit group. If you are interested in more information, or have stories or other submissions that you would like to see published, contact me! Attention all writers and artists: Austral'a'in is desperately seeking submissions. We are also always looking for new members. Please? Contact me (Cassandra) at garou@netspeed.com.au for details!

    • Children of Velgarth: Editor: Kendra Renaud, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA 92652. I publish new and old personae, even previously published persona if asked by members in this new, official QO zine. I will only accept what was sent in for your persona to Queen's Own to be recognized. Any fan fiction written later should be sent to one of the other zines who really need it to keep their zines going. This fanzine will be published periodically when it reaches 80 pages or so to keep costs at $5.00 payable in U.S. funds or 12 IRCs. Make checks payable to "Kendra Renaud". The fee covers the cost of printing and mailing; you may share (but not duplicate!) copies of the fanzine. Watch the Queen's Own newsletter for release dates. Volume 2, Issue 2 is now available! For the contents list and additional information, visit http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qozine.htm. (Special Note: Make sure you use the P.O. Box Address and not my home address since I’m moving at the end of May. I don’t want any orders to go astray.)

    • Companions' Grove: Editor: Devin Harris (Blue Devyn). Companions' Grove still needs stories and artists . . . particularly artists willing to illustrate stories! CG Volume Seven is open to all submissions, and Cat’s Cradle, a SERRAted Edge novella by Heather Arnold, needs an illustrator who can draw the usual humans, elves, and elvensteeds, plus, ummm …trucks *G*; if you’re interested, please send a couple of black and white art samples to devin@greendragonpress.net, or snail mail them to the address below. To order via snail mail, send check or money order (payable to Devin Harris; US funds only) to Green Dragon Press, c/o Devin Harris, 4531 N Kelishan St, Pahrump, NV 89060.

    Collegium News:

We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm.

You need a release form (online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qomlrel2.htm) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.

All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to Legend@malcor.com and healermoon@gmail.com.

    • Welcome to Bard Raina Cael, who has Bardic Gift and Talent! Bard Raina is brought to us by BriAnne Searles, who wrote one story about her persona and one story about her family and friends. She sent a picture of herself in a play as well as the program for the play, and she drew a picture of a costume that she designed.

    • Congratulations to Shin’a’in Leshya'edrin shena Pretera’sedrin, Clan Chief of the Grasscat Clan. Gwenaelle Durand wrote a story about her persona, family and friends, and had it published in Austral’a’in. She knows archery, can ride a horse, and has learned the care and feeding of horses.

    • Welcome Tayledras Mage Flameheart k’Chona and her Bondbird Choni! Flameheart has very strong Mindspeech and the ability to communicate with her bondbird, humans and other races. Rachel Kory wrote about her persona and Flameheart’s family and friends, drew a picture of her bondbird and sent a poem.

    From Herald-Mage Master Danya Winterborn:

    Heyla, all!

You’ve all probably noticed by now that I’m feeling much better <G>. All of the QO newsletters are coded and online (with art!). The Webring is working again, and our other Webrings have been migrated to the new system (Still working out some bugs, but overall, these are in much better shape than they’ve been in for over half a year <g>.). Our QO chatlist is functioning again, thanks to Moonstar. A bunch of broken links have been fixed; some new links have been added. People with pending personae are finally hearing back from us. We’re back in touch with Herald Bastian, and we’ll be bringing the Vanyel Fan Club back to life (The chatlist is already up and running.). We’re also doing a major overhaul of the site based on information from The Valdemar Companion. Look for updated persona handouts, FAQ sheets for various cultures and on a variety of topics, and other fun stuff to appear online soon.

John is now two months old, and he’s the other reason I’m getting so much work done. See, he has a habit of wanting to nurse between about 3:30 AM and 5:30 AM. Then about the time he falls asleep, my daughter, Kassie, is almost ready to wake up. Since I’ve been a terrible insomniac for more years than I care to think about, that means I can’t get back to sleep after John wakes me up. So I figure that as long as I’m up anyway, I might as well do some work <g>.

This month is kind of special for me in that I hit 40 on the 3rd. All in all, it’s been a pretty good decade. My first book came out in hardcover and has since gone to paperback (as well as into a Japanese translation with a Russian translation pending). I’ve had three wonderful children added to my life. I moved out of apartments and into my own home (It’s much nicer not having to share walls anymore <g>.). I was ordained as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and I’ve been extremely active in my church government. You can check out my bio page at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/author.htm for some of the other highlights of what I’ve been up to. Becoming active in QO and now helping to lead the club has been a special joy. Thanks to all of you for your support! It’s a real pleasure to be working and playing with you.

    Zhai’helleva,

    Danya

    Fan Messages:

The newsletter is routinely posted to the Net. If you are concerned about your address falling into unfriendly hands, don't place a fan message! You may answer fan messages without ever placing one yourself. The editors reserve the right to edit--and shorten!--all messages. (Remember to tell your Post Office about your alternative name if you wish to receive mail addressed to your persona at an addressed where you receive mail under your real name.)

The only "fee" for a fan message is to write to two other people. If your mailbox is empty, don't complain--write letters!

    • From White Winds Sorceress Shadow Weaver (cimeshadow@aol.com). I am looking for gothic and sci-fi fantasy events in Ohio/KY/Indiana/West Virginia to merchant at. If you have any info please e-mail cimeshadow@aol.com or snail mail Cimeshadow Weaver, 2119 Jasmine Dr., Lexington, KY, 40504.

    • From Jennifer Mackay-Douglas (vze28fbf@verizon.net) to all her old pen pals (and some new ones, I hope): I got married in May 99 and I moved around so much I lost track of my old pen pals. My interests include reading soft SF, short stories (primarily Asimov's because of budget), and fantasy. Nonfiction topics I usually read include: vegetarian cooking, pet care, natural health, history (my hubby and I do Civil War reenacting), and science research on genetic engineering (for my in-progress SF novel). I love going to SF/F cons, enjoy roleplay gaming, watching movies and TV. (I especially love Farscape on the Sci-Fi Channel.) I love all forms of Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and a ton of other shows and movies. I enjoy reading Misty, Tad Williams, Kate Elliott, Llewellyn, Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. LeGuin, Louise Cooper, Tara K. Harper, and many more! Write me snail mail or email and I'll write you back. :-) Send snail letters via the US Post Awful to: Jennifer Mackay-Douglas, 970 Main Street, Clifton Park, NY 12065.
