Several of you have noticed that four of our RPs every year include horse and/or camel races. The oldtimers know why this is, but apparently it has become a mystery to our more recent members. So I've decided to take this opportunity to explain.

The races were originally incorporated into the game because they have been critical to the development of several of the major characters. Dragonlord Krin and Exercise Master Brett both own strings of camels and horses, and the success of their caravans and racers are why the century that looks to them is financially better off and better supplied than most. (Their earnings go directly toward supporting their century.) Cottager Kristopher is a messenger who is eternally in search of fast mounts. Fortunately his father, Lordling Caleb, has one of the most successful programs for breeding racers on Centuria. Lord Janix has seen the production of fast horses as a way to try to put himself above the established nobility. (Most of the nobles in the game have inherited their positions; Janix has earned his.) Lord Gellaim gave Lady Jalla, Janix's daughter, was given a string as a dowry in the hope that she and her new husband, Kristopher, would show up Janix at races as well as earn a tidy income that would enable the couple to live on their own. Sahib Reisel breeds fast mounts in an effort to beat his competition for the most profitable caravan runs. And so forth.

Game-wise, the rationale for having races is to test the various breeding lines. The army messengers need fast mounts to relay orders along the battle lines, and the races give the army suppliers a good indication of which breeder they should buy from. Dumnonia subsists almost entirely on the supplies that can be brought in by caravan, so the faster the caravans can make those runs, the better.

If you want to "watch" the races, all you have to do is show up for one of the RPs where they are being run <G>. If you want to bet on the races, the raceform is usually posted on the Members Only site a few days prior to the event. Here you can see which racers are running when, and your characters may place bets on them. This is a fun way to increase your account balance if you become knowledgeable about which owner really has the best animals. Results of the races are posted after event. (You'll find the button to get to them at the bottom of the raceform.) If you place bets, our Banker will tell you how much you've won or lost and adjust your account(s) accordingly.

If you have a character whom you think would like to start a racing string or should own one that is already established, you can find information about how to create a string at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/racers.htm. If you've been coming to RPs, you'll have seen Kasie slowly building a string over the years, mainly through animals gifted to her at the end of each year by Krin and Jilian. You can use your money in your account to buy animals, or you can find other ways to obtain them (perhaps by trading a current owner something of value in exchange for one).

There are two types of strings: racing and breeding. Some characters own both. Others own one or the other. Lordling Caleb, for instance, used to own both, but he has since retired his racers and now only breeds. Lady Hana has never raced her string, yet she owns Dark Lord, one of the finest breeding stallions on Centuria. If your character is stationed at one of the desert base camps, you will have to find a creative way to house your racers somewhere else (usually inside Daethia). For instance, Krin housed his string for many years with Lordling Caleb, and Cottager Kristopher still takes much of the responsibility of getting Krin's racers from one event to another. Krin's Base Camp on the Other Continent was built with plenty of room to house several strings of racers because the builders knew that both Krin and Brett would be living there.

If you don't want to go to the trouble of creating a string or if you don't have a character who would logically develop one, feel free to adopt! Many of our current string owners are up for adoption (mainly lords of various castles).

That, then, is a very brief overview of what is going on with the racing program. If you have additional questions, feel free to message me!

Dragonlords' Bookstore.

If you want to buy a book online, remember that Dragonlords has a store in association with Amazon.com. I'll be updating the Tanya Huff page soon (At least I'd like to. Anyone feeling ambitious and want to tell me which ones I'm missing?). The Mercedes Lackey page is now up to date.

Dragonlords' T-shirt

Since no designs have been submitted for a club T-shirt, we have put this project on hold until at least two designs are submitted.

If you would like to submit a design for the club T-shirt, send your suggestion in .gif or .jpg format to Dragonlord Krin at Legend@malcor.com. Try to keep your design suggestions to four colors or less, since that will significantly cut our costs.

As soon as two submissions are received, Krin will put the suggestions up on a webpage so we can vote on what we like best. Once the design is chosen, Krin will put up a sign-up sheet so we can see how many people actually want the shirts. Pricing will vary, depending on how many shirts are ordered.
