Welcome to the Dragonlords of Dumnonia newsletter for Ryanon's Base Camp. The following is information to keep you up-to-date on what's happening around Centuria. Good luck to you in battle or adventure.

These are upcoming online events. Please check the message board on the main site and the events schedule on the Members Only site frequently. Dates do change occasionally, and other information you need to enjoy the RPs is linked to each event. We don't want to clutter your mailboxes with all of this data, so please make use of the website as much as you can.

Note:  This month's RP will be held on Delphi. You should have received your invite in your e-mail, but not all of you have visited the forum yet. Please do so prior to the event if you have not done so already. If you need an invite to the forum, message me at Legend@malcor.com.

Since the question came up when two of our members were working on a story, I thought I'd take the opportunity to explain in this newsletter exactly how Dragonriders carry passengers on their Dragons.

You don't see a lot of shuttling of people via Dragon going on around Centuria because of those nasty spikes that line the Dragons backs. Most people prefer to use the ubiquitous teleport pools that are common in Daethia or the stable warps that are known to caravaneers. But if a character really has to travel as a passenger with a Dragonrider, there are two ways that can be accomplished.

First, you have to understand how a Dragonrider sits on his Dragon. This is modeled off how pictures of Lawrence of Arabia sat his camel and how I've seen nomads sit Bactrian camels. Look at the first picture here:

Shashtah has his right leg crooked around Tphah's spike at the base of her neckridge. His left leg lies flat against her left shoulder. It's a bit like a woman sitting side-saddle. If you read the novels and short stories, you'll see this position described many times. This method of sitting on the Dragons is what accounts for the strange scar patterns on Dragonriders' legs.

Now, to carry a passenger, a Rider can

  1. Balance someone sitting on his right thigh, with her legs crossing over his lap and draping down the left side of the Dragon. The Rider's right arm wraps around the passenger's waist. This is the preferred method and the safest way to carry a passenger.

  2. If the Rider has a second passenger, he can stand on the Rider's left foot and hold onto her left leg or whatever he can reach. The Rider grips the passenger with her left hand, holding onto a collar or belt or whatever is handy. This is usually only done with Hatchlings or something else that is in childform yet that can shapeshift to fly if there is a problem. It is highly dangerous.

There are no other acceptable ways for a Dragonrider to carry a passenger. Everything else interferes with a Dragon's ability to fly. Saddles, baskets, etc., are not allowed. The only permitted tack is the harness that enables a Rider to speedfly. A Dragon may not carry anyone as a Rider except the person who is trained to Ride on him. (The Council of Ancients is really fussy about this rule.) Even Shifted Dragons and mutants adhere to these regulations. Also, a mutant may prove to be so small that it may be impossible for someone to carry a passenger. For instance, Quatar never carries anyone on Peri unless it's a dire emergency. The bulk would interfere with Peri's wing movements and make it nearly impossible for him to fly.

Whatever style is used, most Riders do not carry passengers longer than just going from one place to another. Essentially what you have, in spite of the immense size of the creatures, are one-man fighter planes. These are not the draconic equivalent of troop transports. So it is possible to catch a ride to a remote location with a Dragonrider, but keep in mind that it is also dangerous. There might be a quicker, more comfortable and safer way to get where you are going.

Dragonlord Timber updated our birthday lists, no-no names list and who owns which character lists. She's now hard at work on the timelines. Warrior Chalin is busily figuring out our characters' bank accounts. Thanks to both for their help! There are always things that need doing around Dragonlords. If you have some free time and want to help, contact Dragonlord Krin at Legend@malcor.com!

The first of the Centuria stories, "Dragonprophet" was nominated for Best Story of the Year for Eternity Magazine. It will also appear in a trade paperback anthology of The Best of Eternity, scheduled for release in Fall/Winter 1999. (A printing equipment glitch at the press has delayed publication until Winter/Spring 2000.) Cover price will be $19.95. [Plans for anthology canceled June 2000.]

Also, remember that members of Dragonlords are entitled to read the completed, yet unpublished, Centuria stories. Contact Dragonlord Krin at Legend@malcor.com for your copies.

Other Publication News.

From Scythia to Camelot, the nonfiction book about King Arthur that I coauthored with C. Scott Littleton, is now available in paperback! The cover price is $25.95. This edition will be revised from the original, with corrections of errata, new material and a new appendix. Garland has also promised that the index will be corrected in this copy. Dragonlords' T-shirt

Since no designs have been submitted for a club T-shirt, we have put this project on hold until at least two designs are submitted.

If you would like to submit a design for the club T-shirt, send your suggestion in .gif or .jpg format to Dragonlord Krin at Legend@malcor.com. Try to keep your design suggestions to four colors or less, since that will significantly cut our costs.

As soon as two submissions are received, Krin will put the suggestions up on a webpage so we can vote on what we like best. Once the design is chosen, Krin will put up a sign-up sheet so we can see how many people actually want the shirts. Pricing will vary, depending on how many shirts are ordered.

You have completed your assignment thus far;
continue to strive onwards.

Until next forum,
keep safe!
