King Arthur
Roger Sherman Loomis
To many, Roger Sherman Loomis was the grandfather of modern Arthurian scholarship.
While most of his ideas have been disproved or have become outdated, his
works had a great impact on the scholarship of his day. Some of his collections
are still the only reference sources of their kind.
-
Celtic Myth and Arthurian Romance
- A myth-ritualist, Loomis sees the origins of the Arthurian tradition in rituals inspired by
Celtic mythology.
Paperback (1994)
-
Grail: From Celtic Myth to Christian Symbol
- While much of Loomis's hypothesis about the development of the Grail cycle has been called into question,
this book had a tremendous impact on the intellectual world of his day. Many of the notions expressed
by Arthurian scholars today were expressed here for the first time, though with different
chains of reasoning to support them.
-
Medieval Romances
- Loomis includes some commentary in this collection of medieval legends, which he co-edited with Laura Hibbard Loomis.
Paperback (1957)
